Port Moves Lane Field Forward Without Addressing Environmental Risks.

At their January 8th meeting, the Board of Port Commissioners certified environmental documents and issued an appealable Coastal Development Permit for the Lane Field Project despite inadequately mitigated environmental impacts.

Over 50 UNITE HERE members attended the hearing to request that the Port require the developer to do more to address the outstanding environmental issues, which include severely contaminated soil at the site and a potential lack of police and fire services. These issues could have a direct impact on those working next door to Lane Field at Holiday Inn on the Bay – as well as on others working and living nearby, and on the environment.

UNITE HERE submitted two comment letters to the Port outlining why moving forward with the project in its current form would put people at risk and damage marine life in the San Diego Bay.

The first letter details how reliance on outdated environmental analyses and information violates the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and advises the Port to perform a project specific Environmental Impact Report to address the outstanding impacts. The second letter describes how the project is inconsistent with aspects of the Port Master Plan, including the stated development and conservation goals, and therefore ineligible for a Coastal Development Permit under the Coastal Act. The Coastal Development Permit issued by the Port is appealable to the Coastal Commission. The twelve commissioners of the statewide agency will have the final say on whether the project is consistent with the Port Master Plan and the Coastal Act.
